One Easy Deed

One easy deed - that you need to keep with you all the time - because there are some deeds that are difficult, and some deeds that are easy. There are some deeds that are very demanding, and some deeds that don’t cost you anything.

I’m going to tell you about a deed. Ibn Jawzi, a very famous classical scholar based in Baghdad, says there is something you can learn from every profession, even from the burglars.

He talks about a very important rule that burglars have - the golden rule for anyone in the field of burglary.

What is the most important thing for a burglar? When you steal a house what do you look for? If you want to steal a house, what would you steal. Gold, right?

Golden Rule

The golden rule is: You take what is light in weight, expensive in price.

Gold, diamonds, jewelery… You don’t go for the couches!

Ibn Jawzi says one can learn a lot form this rule. You need to target the deeds that are very light in weight and very valuable in reward.

The Messenger of Allah (SWT) (peace and blessings of Allah (SWT) be upon him) says:

“Two words, very light on the tongue, very heavy on the scale (on the Day of Judgement) …”

[Bukhari]

So this is what you need to target. The Dhikr (Remembrance) of Allah (SWT) ‘azza wa jal doesn’t cost you anything, it doesn’t take a lot of time. It’s like a transparent sheet that can fit over your schedule, you don’t have to shuffle anything around.

At Work

Your schedule for the whole day is booked, but you can still fit in Dhikr. You’re going to drive from point A to B, make Dhikr. You’re going to go up the stairs, make Dhikr. When you are sitting at your desk, make Dhikr. In between the meetings, make Dhikr. Unlike other deeds like Hajj, you have to take time off.

But with the Dhikr of Allah (SWT), it is so easy to do. But the reward of it is very, very, very great. So remember the rule of buglary, the golden rule: What is light in weight, but is very expensive and valuable.
